What is an essential oil diffuser necklace?
If you’re here reading this, I already know you LOVE essential oils!
We can diffuse them, we can wear them and we can even ingest them!
Essential oils are the greatest when we are in the comfort of our own home. But what about when we are on the go?
I was always running around with a million bottles of different oils in my purse, and then wondering what that smell was, what and how much leaked in the bottom.
Now, wasting essential oils is never a thing. So what was my solution to the menagerie of scents and oil slick in my purse? Essential oil necklaces are my friend!
Essential Oil Abuse No More!
In this article, you will read and learn about aromatherapy jewelry and how important it is to maintain our well-being throughout our busy day and how the jewelry can help.
You will discover the different types of necklaces and materials used to hold onto those precious, healing fragrances throughout your day. You will be given plenty of options so picking a necklace for your lifestyle and needs has been made easy.
From Essential Mess to Essential Jewelry
Before essential necklaces, I was left with throwing on a dab of lavender on the back of my neck to relax or maybe I needed peppermint on my temples to relieve that midday headache.
Dripping everywhere. Staining my clothes. Wasting oils. The purpose of oils is to enhance your life, not to create one more chore on your list of things to do to improve your well-being.
And again, with all the bottles in my purse, it was becoming more work than it was worth. Not to mention wasteful and well for me, wasting essential oils is NOT a thing!
In the last few years, we have seen a growing trend in wearable jewelry with the sole purpose of portable essential oils. This exhibits a beautiful, growing wave of people striving for a higher awareness of their overall health wherever they go!
From necklaces to bracelets and earrings, wearing your favorite essential oils has turned decorative jewelry into functioning accessories that go with any outfit.
For the most part, the necklaces purpose is to be able to receive a continuous feed of your oils to your olfactory system, i.e., your nose.
There are a few that can be worn for the purpose of topical application but for the most part, they are worn for the oils to be smelled.
Be sure to read the fine print in the details of the necklace to ensure you are purchasing a necklace that fits your needs. When in doubt, message the seller and ask!
Diffuser Necklaces: How They Work
Frame. Pad. Snap.
The essential oil necklaces usually come in a pendant style necklace that opens and closes just like a locket. However, instead of an old school picture being tucked away, there is an essential oils pad!
The pendants come in all shapes and sizes, it is a matter of personal preference.
The way the pendants work is like this. Within each pendant is a type of pad used to hold the oil.
The pads are typically made from cotton, felt, wool or leather. Some people also use the pompoms from the local craft store.
Now there is no right or wrong pad to use but there is a difference in how long each material holds on to the scent of the oil. The cheaper the pad, the less it will hold on to the oil.
Many people choose the pompoms or felt because they are the least expensive pads to purchase. And while I am all about saving money, buying cheap pads isn’t the place to do it and here’s why.
The cheaper the pad, the more oil you are going to use. Synthetic materials, such as the pompoms, will not hold onto the oil. The textile is not porous therefore not absorbing the actual oil which most of evaporates.
While the downside to these pads is a short life span, many people enjoy these as they can be washed and reused with a different scent.
My thoughts on that are the fact they are so cheap to buy you can have a pad for every scent. I would prefer to spend my money on trying new oils rather than replacement oils because I am using so much replenishing the scent on the pad.
Again, it’s all about personal preference so take what works for you and leave the rest!
High quality cotton or thick wool is a better choice while leather being optimum choice. With both cotton and leather, you are pretty much committed to that scent on that particular piece of cotton/leather.
The upside is the more that soaks into the leather, the stronger the staying power of the oil, the less oil you have to use.
However, do not fret my pet! If you are worried about having to commit to one scent per piece pad, I will detail how you can make your own pads, one for every oil, a little later.
The other type of pendant essential oil necklace material used to hold oil, rocks.
No, not the rocks from your yard but lava beads, terracotta and other clay beads.
These are highly porous and absorb the oils throughout. The clay in the lava/terracotta hold on to the scent for decent period of time depending on the concentration of the oil and how much.
You have the option to soak the beads in oil if you are wanting a stronger scent throughout the day or you can add just a few drops on your way out the door.
Types of Aromatherapy Necklaces
There are many types of materials used to hold onto the sweet smell of your healing oils.
So, let’s get started at looking at four different types of necklaces.
This beautiful necklace is a sweet, simple way to wear your oils. The stainless-steel chain and pendant come with eight different colored lava beads that do not fade in color over time.
The stainless-steel chain and cage are a perfect material for avoiding allergic reaction and potential tarnishing against any oils with a higher acidity.
The necklace is light and dainty enough it would be a perfect gift for a child or someone who does not care for big, bulky, heavy jewelry.
Each lava bead fits perfectly into a polished, filigree crafted cage catching all the light while emitting all the scents.
This is one of my favorite necklaces. It is on an adjustable stainless steel chain with five black lava beads lined up next to each other creating a bar of lava beads that lies beautifully across your neck.
I prefer this necklace because it is easy. It does not require pads, cages or the possibility of dripping oil. As an extremely active entrepreneur, mother and athlete, I need easy in my life.
The black lava stones go with everything. The adjustable chain allows me to wear the necklace high on my neck (my personal preference) as it keeps the oils closer to my nose and further away from my clothes. I can put on a few quick drops and run out the door or I can soak the beads over night for those really long days where freshing up my necklace isn’t going to be an option.
For me that is just about every day so this necklace is perfect for those always on the go. It is also one of the most affordable necklaces as well as the least amount of effort in my experience.
This is one of the more common types of diffuser necklaces.
Many prefer this type of pendant for a couple of reasons.
One, it lies flat on the chest. For me this is a selling (or not selling) point as I am not a fan of things rolling around on my chest.
Two, it comes with 16 different synthetic pads and an adjustable chain. This makes for a perfect gift as whoever you give it to has the option to adjust the length and pick the color. The pads it comes with are washable and reusable and oh so colorful, allowing you to make your necklace match what you’re wearing.
Three, it has the sweetest message of encouragement on the back. Adding encouraging words to the healing properties of essential oils and you have a necklace that screams, “I CARE ABOUT YOU!” Oh, and it comes with a gift bag.
It is made of surgical grade stainless-steel with the bar pendant at an 1 ¾ inches long with a 24” chain that is not adjustable in length.
The unique feature of this necklace aside from the cylindrical style bar, this necklace is different from the others in that there is no stone or pad for the oil to absorb into.
The way this necklace works is with just oil. The easy to use container allows you to add your favorite oils while the beautifully crafted aerated upper portion of the pendant allows your oil scents to flow freely throughout the day.
This all but eliminates the need to repeatedly add oil to the necklace which is can be necessary with the necklaces containing pads or beads.
But does it leak?
Well, in short, if the lavender oil has you craving a nap, or maybe the peppermint oil has given you a pep to your step and got so much relief you decided to do a cartwheel, then yes, the oil will come out!
For the functionality purpose of being exposed to your oil of choice throughout the day without having to freshen up the necklace, you may find this to be the necklace for you.
Of all three necklaces, I would not recommend this necklace for children, the elderly or the extremely active for the simple reason if the container is anything but upright, you’re going to lose your oil.
Looking at Lava Beads
Lava beads are an igneous, basalt rock made from magma when a volcano erupts. They are a porous material making it an optimum material for the absorption of essential oils.
Natural lava rocks are typically brown to black in color. Some lava rock beads produced for the purpose of essential oil necklaces have been colored. Because lava rocks are so porous and they hold oil so well, depending on the concentration of oil and type of oil you choose, the lava beads can diffuse your oil for six to eight hours, sometimes longer!
Depending on where you purchase your necklace, you can get lava beads produced in coordination with the seven chakras. Others are produced for purely aesthetics.
If we go a little deeper into the meaning of lava rocks, we find that it has been said that lava rocks are grounding and inspire courage and strength within the natural energy of our bodies (Wellness Beads Infused) .
Reaching outside of the essential oil world and into the scientific world, lava is considered a gemstone.
Gemstone7 has this to say about using lava beads in your everyday life and the purposes it can serve:
“It has been believed as a gemstone that is filled with the energy of the Earth. Lava is a kind of stone that is made from cold magma. It has the strongest core energy of the Earth inside. Lava is known for its great healing power and holds the meaning and properties of the owner’s soul. This gemstone can increase and heal your energy at the same time.”
Additional properties are increasing love, reducing anxiety and fear as well as clearing off energy that is no longer serving you. Combing lava rocks with essential oils can be a powerful combination in finding relief for whatever may be ailing you.
DIY Your Own Essential Oil Necklace
Making your own do-it-yourself necklace is completely doable! All it takes is a quick trip to your local hobby store, a little creativity, your time and personal preference.
First, be sure whatever you buy is a high grade 316L surgical stainless steel. Now, I know this sounds fancy and expensive but it’s really not. Manufacturers of chains and pendants are aware of people’s sensitivities to metals such as nickel and even sterling silver and produce products accordingly.
Stainless steel in general has the lowest allergic reaction (if any at all) of all the metals, is more affordable than sterling silver and will not tarnish. This is an important factor because using acidic oils on metals other than stainless steel will most likely tarnish and potentially turn your skin that Kermit the Frog green.
This applies to not only the chain but to the type of cage you choose for your necklace. Whether you choose a locket style cage for pads or a cage to hold lava beads, stainless steel is the way you want to go.
Be sure to check the tags of what you are purchasing.
Pick your chain, pick your cage and tada!! You have your own personally created essential oil necklace!
DIY All Natural Essential Oil Necklace
All metals aside….
If you don’t want to wear metal but still want an essential oil necklace, no worries!
There are plenty of natural textiles available for you to create your own necklace.
Grab a line of twine (hemp twine is a great option), a little air-dry clay (terracotta), a bottle cap and a toothpick.
Roll out your clay and use the bottle cap like a cookie cutter. Use the toothpick to poke small holes in the newly created clay disc and one larger hole at the top of the disc to thread the twine through.
If you don’t want just holes poked in the disc, you can get really creative and purchase stamps to really personalize your necklace.
Once you have created your disc, allow it to dry for approximately two days (or as suggested by manufacturer), thread your twine of choice and grab your oil.
Upon the first use, I would suggest lying the newly crafted clay pendant on a paper towel, adding 2-4 drops of your favorite oil and allowing it fully absorb as much of the oil prior to putting it on. This will allow you to see how much oil your pendant can hold without using too much oil and risk staining your clothing.
If you already have a necklace and need new pads, it’s not necessary for you to order new ones because you can make your own!
This is about as easy as it sounds. It is a matter of picking your favorite material, creating a template and a pair of scissors.
If you are going to make your own pads, I would suggest going with leather. Of course, you can use a felt, cotton or wool if leather is not an option for you.
I suggest leather for the simple reason it holds onto the oil much longer. If leather is not a thing in your life, I suggest using a thick, quality wool.
Two reasons for using either wool or leather (aside from lava beads and terracotta).
One, these two textiles hold onto the oil longer, allowing for hours of diffusing. This leads me to the second reason. The longer the textile holds onto the oil, the less time you are taking to freshen up your necklace and you are having to use less of your precious essential oils!
